1991 Pontiac Firebird Convertible

Description:

1991 Pontiac Firebird Convertible

A beloved symbol of 1970s car culture. An icon of disco era design. A redneck's red-letter regalia. It's gaudy. Garish. Tacky. Even vulgar. And we love it. This is the story of Pontiac's Screaming Chicken, the largest and most recognizable decal in automotive history. Lost to time is the name of the man that first referred to the graphic as a "Screaming Chicken." The nickname came quickly. By the late 1970s, even Car and Driver was using the label. No doubt derogatory, over time the epithet has become one of endearment, although the brand's hardest purists still hate it. That bunch landed on "hood bird" four decades ago and refused to budge. Others go with "Rising Phoenix" or simply "Firebird." The ignorant usually refer to the massive flaming fowl as an Eagle or a Hawk.

This rounded off version of the iconic Firebird right out of 1991 remains in very nice condition with a non-verifiable 72,609 miles on the odometer as the title reads exempt. It's a 2 female owned, garage kept, well cared for example of the "chicken less" hood version and has a like new black convertible top, all bathed in Bright Red and ripe for the picking. Call it a forbidden fruit low hanging and in our South hallway.

Exterior
A Bright Red base coat and clear coat paint adorns the straight panels of this car and comes to us with a few scuffs, chips and scrapes that are appropriate for the age and miles. Virtually no chrome is to be seen and all composite bumpers and front and rear parts come together to form this aerodynamic and slightly lighter car than the Trans Am version. The lines of this car blend seamlessly to form the final shape, all smooth and aerodynamic. All red and all looking great from the hidden headlights through the rear greenhouse glass and sexy spoiler bringing up the rear. Lest we forget the black canvas convertible top that shows with no tearing and fairly clean plastic rear window. 15-inch Pontiac cast wheels with black negative spaces are on all 4 corners and are wrapped in like new 215/65R15 blackwall radials.

Interior
Like new light gray velour broadcloth seats in high back bucket form flank a black center console. This gently rises to the dash where we see a black front dash with plenty of round inset gauges. This is all fronted by an original steering wheel. Within the console is the shift lever, handbrake, power mirror controls and window toggles. An AM/FM/Cassette radio is neatly installed from the factory. In back more light and dark gray velour broadcloth in the form of a split seat, (by the hump), and split back rear bench setup. Like new gray carpeting is all around and is well protected by heavy duty carpeted mats. Clean door panels use the shades of gray along with some molded black plastic for the trimmings and actuator panel. While not as roomy in the back as its coupe counterparts there is still ample trunk space, so load up your picnic supplies and let's roll.

Drivetrain
A 5.0 Liter V8 resides under the hood and sits in a super clean and shiny environment with little to no corrosion. It is fed by throttle body injection EFI and a 700R4 4-speed automatic bolted to the back. A 10-bolt rear axle is noted on the back.

Undercarriage
Some surface rust is noted in the usual steel structures, but the floor pans and rockers are rust free and have a light coating of the factory Bright Red paint overspray. In front we note independent coil spring suspension, and on back torque arms with coil springs. Power disc brakes are on for the front and power drums are seen in the rear and a single exhaust with a stock replacement muffler and dual outlets is now installed.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter, smooth driver and some nice power. Overall, a good car, with nice paint, a clean interior and a very comfortable ride. Everything was working just wonderfully during my drive and it was a blast enjoying the wind in what's left of my ever thinning hair.

Right out of 1991, this red, red bird is ready to have its key turned and driven away for more fun. Look at it as your screaming chicken less Firebird lighting the tires up and looking good doing it!
