This 1968 Ford Mustang GT/CS California Special is a beautiful example of one of the most distinctive limited-production Mustangs of the 1960s. Finished in its original Seafoam Green with a black vinyl top and excellent original dark green interior, this GT/CS has the classic combination of colors and styling that makes these cars immediately recognizable.
Under the hood is its numbers-matching 289ci V8 backed by a year-correct C4 automatic transmission and a 2.80 posi-traction rear end. Power steering makes it enjoyable to drive, while the dual exhaust with Shelby GT-style tips gives the Mustang the look and sound it deserves.
The California Special received a number of Shelby-inspired exterior touches that separated it from a standard Mustang hardtop. These included a fiberglass rear deck lid and quarter extensions creating the distinctive rear spoiler treatment, 1965 Thunderbird-style taillights, fiberglass side scoops, GT/CS quarter-panel emblems, special striping, a blacked-out grille with fog lights, and a pop-open GT-style gas cap.
This example also features GT-style wheels with hubcaps, quarter-turn hood locks, a factory AM radio, and shows 59,671 miles on the odometer.
THE CALIFORNIA SPECIAL STORY
The Mustang GT/CS was introduced during the 1968 model year as a special edition aimed primarily at Ford's booming California market. Southern California was one of Ford's strongest Mustang sales regions, and dealers wanted something unique that would stand apart from the standard Mustang.
The inspiration came from Shelby styling concepts and, most notably, the famous Shelby-built Mustang coupe prototype known as ""Little Red."" Elements of that Shelby-inspired design were adapted to the Mustang hardtop and became the GT/CS, or California Special.
All GT/CS Mustangs were assembled at Ford's San Jose, California plant. Although originally intended primarily for California dealers, demand eventually spread to other parts of the country and even into Canada.
Only 4,118 California Special Mustangs were ultimately produced for 1968, making them a relatively uncommon and highly recognizable part of Mustang history.
Unlike a separate high-performance model, the GT/CS could be ordered with many of the same engines, transmissions, colors, and options available on a regular Mustang. What made the California Special unique was its unmistakable Shelby-inspired appearance package and its limited production.
With its numbers-matching 289 V8, original Seafoam Green color combination, desirable GT/CS styling, and limited-production history, this is one sharp Mustang that stands out from the crowd.
