This 1996 Mercury Tracer wagon is a remarkably well-preserved example of an increasingly uncommon piece of 1990s automotive history. Finished in Bright Calypso Metallic over a gray cloth interior, this Tracer has remained with the same owner since new and shows just 55,229 miles. It has spent its life in Indiana as a personal vehicle and averaged only approximately 2,098 miles per year.
Power comes from a 1.9-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. Rated at approximately 88 horsepower when new, the Tracer was designed around simple, economical, and dependable transportation. This example is equipped with power steering, power brakes, front disc brakes, air conditioning, heat, power windows, and power door locks. According to the previous owner, all options operate as they should.
The exterior retains a wonderfully period-correct appearance, with the Bright Calypso Metallic finish giving the wagon the unmistakable teal color associated with the 1990s. Factory-style wheel covers, black window trim, roof rails, and its clean, straightforward body lines complete the look. The wagon body provides considerably more cargo space than the Tracer sedan while retaining compact dimensions that make it easy to drive and maneuver.
Inside, the gray cloth interior remains impressively original in appearance. The cabin features cloth seating, an analog gauge cluster, factory audio system, automatic floor shifter, and straightforward controls throughout. Power windows and power door locks add convenience, while the rear seating and large cargo area provide the everyday practicality expected from a compact station wagon.
Its ownership history is particularly noteworthy. The vehicle was purchased new in Indiana in May 1996 and remained with its original owner for approximately 30 years. The vehicle history shows consistent Indiana registration with no reported accidents, structural damage, total loss, or odometer issues. Service history includes an air filter, evaporative emissions purge valve, evaporator drain hose, and exhaust pipe service in 2019, along with an oil and filter change later that year. The air-conditioning system was recharged in 2022.
For anyone who remembers seeing these cars on the road when they were new, this Tracer offers a genuine dose of 1990s nostalgia. With its one-owner history, actual low mileage, highly original presentation, distinctive Bright Calypso Metallic finish, and the practicality of a four-door wagon, this 1996 Mercury Tracer represents the kind of everyday car that has become surprisingly difficult to find in this condition nearly three decades later.
