This 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible combines the appearance and character of a carefully restored Tri-Five with upgrades that make it far more accommodating on today's roads. A body-off restoration returned the Chevrolet to a high standard throughout, while a 355ci small-block V8, overdrive automatic transmission, power rack-and-pinion steering, power brakes and modern air conditioning expand its cruising capability without changing its unmistakable 1950s identity.
The body is finished in Dusk Rose and India Ivory, a period-appropriate two-tone combination complemented by a white convertible top. Bel Air quarter scripts, Chevrolet emblems, a hood ornament and full-length side trim preserve the original presentation, joined by bright chrome bumpers, grillework, and dual mirrors. Factory-style full wheel covers and wide whitewall radial tires complete the traditional appearance, while the lowered stance gives the car a subtly customized profile. Power comes from a 355ci Chevrolet small-block V8 topped by dual Weber four-barrel carburetors and an aluminum Edelbrock intake manifold. Finned Edelbrock valve covers, Moon breathers, a finned aluminum air cleaner and a polished accessory drive add period-inspired detail, while ram's horn exhaust manifolds feed a dual exhaust system equipped with Xlerator mufflers. Cooling is supported by an aluminum radiator, an engine-driven mechanical fan and an auxiliary electric pusher fan. A 700R4 4-speed automatic sends power to a GM 8.2"" drop-out rear axle equipped with 3.55 gearing and Positraction. The factory-style suspension has been lowered and supplemented by a front anti-sway bar and tubular front chassis brace. Inside, Ivory and Charcoal upholstery covers the front and rear bench seats and continues across the custom door panels. A factory-style instrument cluster is supplemented by Stewart-Warner water-temperature and oil-pressure gauges mounted beneath the dashboard. Modern air conditioning is integrated through discreet vents and controls, while a Sony AM/FM/CD head unit is concealed inside the glovebox. The finished trunk carries the same Ivory and Charcoal theme and includes dark carpeting, a relocated battery, an onboard fire extinguisher and trunk-mounted audio equipment.
This Bel Air retains the color, brightwork and open-air presence that make a 1956 convertible so recognizable, then adds the powertrain and convenience features that matter when the car leaves the show field.
