Built for NASCAR, Ford needed a winner, and this was it. The 1963 Ford Galaxie became one of the most important cars in Ford’s Total Performance campaign, taking the fight directly to the NASCAR circuit and then bringing that same performance to the street. This Galaxie 500 XL is an exceptional example of that era, finished in Wimbledon White with a rich Red interior and powered by one of Ford’s most legendary big blocks.
Under the hood is the monster 427 R-Code, Ford’s top performance engine for 1963. Factory rated at 425 horsepower and a massive 480 lb-ft of torque, the R-Code featured a high-performance FE design with solid lifters, forged internals and dual four-barrel carburetors. This is the same basic engine family that Ford developed to dominate both the drag strip and NASCAR. The factory cast iron headers and four-speed puts all that power where you want it, and the makes this big Ford a serious performer.
The engine compartment is exceptionally clean and appears very close to the way it would have looked when delivered new. The factory-style components, detailing and presentation make this a compartment that is just as impressive sitting still as it is when the 427 comes to life.
Inside, the Red interior is stunning and presents like new. The XL interior gives this Galaxie a surprisingly comfortable and upscale feel, but don’t let that fool you. This is still a 427 four-speed Ford built during the height of the Total Performance era. The four-speed gives you the opportunity to enjoy this car the way Ford intended, while the absence of power steering and power brakes keeps the experience very much connected to the road.
The Wimbledon White paint and body are outstanding, with excellent fit, finish and chrome throughout. It has the kind of factory-correct appearance that serious Ford collectors look for. This is a car that looks right from every angle.
Underneath, the story continues. The chassis and underbody are exceptionally clean and present at a concours level. Attention to detail underneath is every bit as impressive as what you see when you open the hood.
The 1963 Galaxie 427 is a very important part of Ford’s performance history. These cars were directly tied to Ford’s Total Performance push, and the 427-powered Galaxies helped establish Ford as a force in NASCAR and drag racing. The production R-Code cars were never common, which makes finding one in this level of condition even more special.
This Galaxie 500 XL would be an outstanding addition to any serious Ford collection. It combines one of Ford’s most legendary engines with the four-speed, the right color combination and exceptional overall presentation.
