1968 Chevrolet Corvette

Description:

This is a 1968 Chevrolet Corvette convertible, VIN 194678S406521, finished in Silverstone Silver over a black vinyl interior. The VIN decodes as a Corvette convertible, 1968 model year, built at St. Louis, which is where every 1968 Corvette was built. Production that year ran from 400001 through 428566, so at 406521 this is an early car in the first year of the C3 body. What makes it worth a serious look is the drivetrain. The engine, transmission, and rear axle all carry stampings that trace back to this specific car, not just to the right year and spec. The block is stamped with the car's own VIN sequence, 406521, alongside the HT suffix code. HT is the 327/350 application, and specifically the version built without air conditioning. This car has no A/C, which is consistent. The Muncie four-speed case is stamped 8S406521, the car's own partial VIN, on a correct 3925660 casting, and it was built on November 29, 1967. The rear axle is coded AM, which decodes to 3.36:1 Positraction, the correct pairing for a 327/350, and it was built on November 30, 1967. Two components built a day apart, both preceding the car, both stamped or coded to match it. That's the kind of internal consistency you can't fake casually, and it's the reason we're comfortable calling this car numbers-matching without hedging. WHAT IT HAS The L79 is the 327 at 350 horsepower, which was a $105 option over the base 327/300 in 1968. It wears correct exhaust manifolds, castings 3872765 on the left and 3872778 on the right, a correct 3919803 intake, and a Rochester Quadrajet. That last one surprises people who assume a 350-horse small block should have a Holley, but the 1968 L79 came with a cast iron intake and a Quadrajet from the factory. It's right. Behind it is the Muncie four-speed and 3.36 Positraction gears. Steering is manual and the brakes are manual. No power assist anywhere on the car. It comes with both tops. The color-matched removable hardtop is with the car, and the soft top is in great condition. It sits on correct Rally wheels with trim rings and redline tires, and it has the wood-rim steering wheel inside. The hidden headlights go up, go down, and light. That sounds like a small thing until you've shopped a few C3s and found out how often the vacuum system on these has been fought with, patched, or given up on. Paint, interior, and chrome all present well. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW The side exhaust shrouds are not correct for a 1968. Side pipes were a 1965 through 1967 option, they were dropped for 1968, and they came back for 1969 only. Whatever's on this car was added later. It's a look a lot of people want, but it isn't factory for this year and we're not going to let anyone believe otherwise. The odometer reads 94,638 and we cannot verify it. There is no documentation with the car and no ownership history, so treat that number as a reading and nothing more. That absence of paperwork applies across the board. We have no build sheet, no window sticker, no Protect-O-Plate, no NCRS documentation, and no service records. What this car has going for it is physical evidence rather than paper. The stampings and castings corroborate each other, and any inspector you send is welcome to verify every one of them in person. We'd encourage it. THE BIGGER PICTURE 1968 was the first year of the C3, and the styling came more or less straight off the Mako Shark II show car. It's also a year with a quirk that surprises people: 1968 is the only C3 year in which the convertible outsold the coupe, and by close to two to one. Everyone wanted the new T-top, and it's the convertible that ended up being the more common body that year. The 327 cars are often overlooked next to the 427s, which is exactly why a good one is worth attention. The small block sits lower under a flat hood, the car carries less weight over the nose, and with a four-speed and 3.36 gears it's a genuinely balanced driver rather than a straight-line specialist. For a lot of people, that's the better car to actually own. HOW TO BUY IT The car is at our shop in Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania. We're happy to shoot a walk-around video and send additional photos, including underbody shots. Third-party inspections are welcome, and on a numbers car we actively encourage them. We charge no documentation fees. We can help coordinate out-of-state transport, but the carrier choice is yours.
