Conceived during Japan's high-performance boom of the late 1980s, the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 was the company's determination to compete with the world's finest grand touring sports cars. Developed in partnership with Chrysler, where it was also sold as the Dodge Stealth R/T Turbo, the all-new platform showcased Mitsubishi's engineering prowess through an advanced blend of technology, luxury, and performance. Rather than relying solely on raw horsepower, engineers focused on creating a sophisticated all-weather sports car capable of challenging European rivals while remaining comfortable enough for everyday use.
For the 1991 model year, the flagship VR-4 came equipped with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre DOHC 24-valve V-6 producing 300 horsepower and 307 lb-ft of torque, paired exclusively with a five-speed manual gearbox and a full-time all-wheel-drive system. It also featured four-wheel steering, electronically controlled suspension, active exhaust, and active aerodynamics, making it one of the more technologically advanced production automobiles of its era. These innovations gave the VR-4 remarkable grip, stability, and high-speed composure that few competitors could match.
A total of 3,693 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4s were built in 1991, of which approximately 760 were factory finished in Glacier White Pearl, such as this example. Showing just 2,200 miles from new, this is a highly original and unmodified early '90s sports icon. Offered with the top trim and twin-turbo engine package, it features the flagship twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre DOHC 24-valve V-6 that's paired with a five-speed manual gearbox.
The first-generation 3000GT VR-4 has emerged as one of the most respected Japanese performance cars of the early 1990s. Unmodified, low mileage examples such as this, have become increasingly difficult to find, with collectors recognizing the model as a landmark achievement that perfectly captures the ambition and engineering excellence of Japan's golden era of sports car development.
