The Shelby name may be the most recognized and revered in all of the autoverse, certainly in the muscle car galaxy. So, when we come across a true numbers-matching, low-mileage example of one of the rarest Shelby-designed Mustangs in history, it is a special day. This stunning 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR, fully repainted in its factory Lime Gold, has just 37,767 believed actual miles on its odometer. One of approximately 1,570 ever made, this mighty muscle car sports a scooped and pinned hood, grille lights, upper and lower quarter panel scoops, ducktail-style rear spoiler, GT500KR rocker panel stripes, and correctly placed badging that, in totality, comprises one of the most sought-after Mustangs on the planet, and a vehicle that lives up to its "King of the Road" moniker.
Inside, we find a clean, believed-original black vinyl interior. A big center console separates a pair of bucket seats, while a power-assisted wood-rimmed steering wheel boasts a Cobra emblem. Set against a wood-grain-trimmed dashboard, a five-pod gauge cluster features an 8,000-rpm tachometer and a curiously conservative 140-mph speedometer. In contrast, a pair of auxiliary gauges keeps tabs on oil pressure and voltage from the center stack. An AM/FM offers some entertainment, but in all actuality, the real music will be emanating from the dual exhaust pipes.
Under that aggressive hood, we find an even more aggressive motor. A numbers-matching 428 cubic-inch Cobra Jet V-8 engine has less than 100 miles on it since being rebuilt. From the factory, this motor was equipped with an iron block and heads, a single four-barrel carburetor, and a high-flow intake manifold. That big block sends spent gases out through dual exhaust capped off with a set of aftermarket mufflers. In 1968, power totals were advertised as grossly underrated 335 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque. That power, whatever the real number is, gets routed through a numbers-matching C6 three-speed automatic transmission, also rebuilt less than 100 miles ago, before heading out to the 3.50-geared rear end.
