1967 Pontiac Firebird

Description:

Super nasty black 67 Firebird with big firepower. Freshly built 460 cubic inch stroker (400 base) by Michaels Racing Engines. Built TH400 automatic. Power steering, power disc brakes. Laser straight bodywork. A killer Firebird with looks to match.

A black Firebird probably isnt subtle enough to be called a sleeper, but with the big firepower that lives under the twin snorkel hood, most folks probably wont expect this awesome 1967 Pontiac Firebird to be as fast as it is. The lightweight package certainly helps the big stroker motor get results, but dressing it in deep, glossy black paint makes it stand out, not blend in. And it wears that black paint quite well, with laser-straight bodywork that reflects beautifully-someone took their time getting this one right. Panel fit is quite good with typical GM foibles like the back of the hood doesnt quite sit flush without being pushed down, but its been a long time since weve seen a Firebird that fits together as well as this one. Other details include a chin spoiler, a functional hood tach, and a ducktail spoiler on the trunk lid, all factory pieces that help with the menacing attitude. A few bits of bright trim help offset all that black paint, including a beautifully finished front bumper, polished wheel lip moldings, and bright stainless around the windows. Factory emblems are in place in a few strategic locations, but nobodys going to mistake this F-body for anything else. It just looks mean.

The black vinyl interior is mostly original, which suggests that this was a nice car that was well maintained its entire life. Theres some minor wear on the drivers seat (new seat covers are included with the car) but Im not sure Id want to give up originality in search of perfection. The door panels are in excellent condition, the dash isnt cracked, and the aftermarket wood-rimmed wheel adds a touch of warmth thats appreciated in the otherwise all-black passenger compartment. Factory gauges are in place, but since they only cover the basics, a trio of aftermarket dials were added under the center stack (note that the ammeter has not been hooked up). Theres an aftermarket AM/FM/cassette stereo that probably dates to the 1980s, but after you hear the way that stroker motor sounds, we doubt youll be too worried about the sound system. Sharp-eyed viewers will also notice the little line lock button on the shifter, and yes, its fully functional-this car has already run 12s with sticky tires. Pontiac-logo floor mats protect the fresh carpets and theres a really nice original headliner overhead. The trunk carries a correct mat and has no signs of trouble underneath.

The engine is a freshly built 460 cubic inch stroker by Michaels Racing Engines. Based on a Pontiac 400 block, it fits in there like it should because, well, thats what came in the car. Michaels has an excellent reputation and this engine is proof-its not fussy, but it sure does cackle! The Ram Air hood is functional, force-feeding the big Holley 4-barrel carb underneath, along with an aluminum Edelbrock intake manifold. It also sports Edelbrock aluminum cylinder heads, an MSD electronic ignition system, and an electric fuel pump to reliably feed the beast. It was dressed in proper Pontiac Turquoise engine enamel with a few chrome dress-up parts to add some flash, and theres a massive aluminum radiator with twin electric fans to keep it all nice and cool. Power steering and power brakes make it easy to handle, and for a big power engine, it starts, idles, and drives extremely well. This is not a high-strung Primadonna. The engine is backed by a built TH400 3-speed automatic that gleefully eats up all the torque the stroker motor puts out, and with 3.55 gears out back, its punchy but not annoying on the highway. Subframe connectors reinforce the tub in a way you can actually feel, and Stainless Works long-tube headers feed a full 3-inch exhaust system that sounds spectacular. Theres also a new gas tank, fresh lines and hoses, upgraded urethane bushings, and fresh shocks to round out the list of new equipment. 15-inch Cragar mags are the right choice on a vintage brawler like this, and they carry staggered 215/65/15 front and 255/70/15 rear BFGoodrich T/A radials.

Documentation is extensive, including factory build sheet, restoration receipts, and a build sheet from Michaels Racing Engines.

This slick Firebird has already proven itself. Its fully sorted, seriously fast, yet surprisingly user-friendly. It has the right look, a lot of attitude, but none of that high-maintenance stuff that makes big horsepower cars a challenge to own. If that sounds like your kind of fun, give us a call today!
