1983 Honda CX650T Turbo
VIN: JH2RC1604DM000911
Visit any museum or private collection that features hallmark Honda motorcycles, and you will be sure to find four iconic models: The 305cc Super Hawk (1961-67), Honda's first sport bike; the CB750K (1969-78), the pioneer that created the 4 cylinder “Universal Japanese Motorcycle”; the CBX (1979-82), Honda's legendary 6 cylinder offering; and the one year only 1983 CX650T, a fuel injected turbocharged middleweight masterpiece of engineering that is as quick as and has a higher top speed than the CBX and the other one liter-plus sport bikes of the era.
Faced with ever growing displacements and cylinders, Honda found another way to improve performance with lighter weight and innovative technology, just as Pontiac had with its middle weight GTO: Twist the throttle open on a turbocharged Honda 650 and the bike feels like a jet's afterburner has has kicked in, very like the feeling of flooring the gas pedal on a tripower equipped GTO.
The CX650T is the rarest of Honda's iconic motorcycles, and the example you see here is one of 1,200 US models. It was purchased by the current owner from noted CX650 restoration specialist Greg Goss in 2009, with 48,700 miles showing on the odometer. It was regularly serviced, including flushing of the coolant system and replacement of the tires and rear shocks in 2015 at 49,700 miles.
The bike was also treated to a cosmetic redo, in accordance with the owner's wishes for a more minimalist appearance. The busy tricolor “look at me” paint scheme was replaced with the monotone hue commonly found on later era bikes. The color chosen was midnight pearl red, which looks black when not under direct sunlight. The various Turbo call-outs were also removed save only the red metal plate on the left side engine; and the turbo decals on the side covers were replaced with ghosted versions blended into the paint. The over-all result is a “stealth turbo” that observers unfamiliar with this rare Honda might well mistake for a hot rod Moto Guzzi on steroids.
This bike has been carefully maintained and sparingly ridden over the past ten years since its last major service, and the odometer currently shows approximately 49,975 miles.
THIS MOTORCYCLE TO BE COLLECTED FROM BORREGO SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA.
