Description:
This custom vehicle is a re-creation of the Drag-U-La coffin dragster featured in a 1965 episode of the television series The Munsters, and it was purchased by the selling dealer in 2026 after spending time displayed in a private collection. The car features split-casket bodywork, lantern-style lighting, and a front-mounted fuel tank, and it is powered by a 302ci Ford V8 with a Weiand high-rise intake manifold, dual Holley carburetors, and organ-style exhaust pipes. The engine is backed by a four-speed manual transmission and a chain-driven 9" rear end, and the car rides on a fabricated frame with 21" and 15" wheels, a Super Bell drop front axle, hairpin radius rods, and rear disc brakes. Those who view the open casket will witness a bucket seat, a hand-operated throttle, a butterfly steering wheel, Equus gauges, and LED light strips. Work performed in preparation for the sale has involved rebuilding the carburetors and front spindles, adding a torque tube, refreshing the brakes, and replacing the spark plugs.
Highlighted in The Munsters episode "Hot Rod Herman", the original Drag-U-La was designed by George Barris of Barris Kustoms. Key elements included bodywork formed from a split-lid casket as well as organ-style vertical exhaust pipes and a tombstone-shaped faux grille.
This car is finished in gold and rides on a frame constructed from steel box tubing. Dual air scoops protrude through the hood and are topped with brass finials. A spun aluminum fuel tank has been installed along with a tinted polycarbonate windscreen, and the front lanterns have bulbs with 120V circuitry. Harley-Davidson 21" wire wheels are mounted up front and wrapped in 3.00" Cheng Shin tires. The Super Bell drop front axle rides on a transverse leaf spring and chrome hairpin radius rods. The spindles were resurrected by the selling dealer in preparation for the sale.
The 302ci Ford V8 is equipped with a Weiand high-rise intake manifold, dual Holley carburetors, and Cobra-branded valve covers. The carburetors were rebuilt and the spark plugs were replaced in 2026. The radiator does not have a cooling fan.
Five-spoke 15" rear wheels wear 28-10.5" Mickey Thompson ET Drag slicks. The four-speed manual transmission is linked to a narrowed 9" rear end through a chain drive. The axle is supported by semi-elliptical leaf springs and equipped with disc brakes. A torque tube was added in 2026. The coffin does not have a parachute.
The coffin lining is purple, and the occupant is provided a fixed-back bucket seat that was painted to match the body. A T-handle on the dashboard fascia operates the throttle cable, and the shifter is topped by a skull-shaped knob. Color-changing LED light strips illuminate the interior of the casket.
